Raising alpacas for the next generation

   Barns

A very important key in the success of a good herd is the barn. How you design the barn may depend upon the lay of your land but here are some good ideas.

   Feed

You need to be careful in your selection of feed as with a recent misjudgement of a small amount of the wrong substance, the number of alpaca suddenly decreased in northern Ohio. The animals sometimes need more than what they find in the pasture and the hay you throw them.

   Fencing

The fence is more to keep out the wild dogs and coyotes and sometimes a 2-year old with a hammer than to keep the alpaca in. Find out the best fencing for the best price and some tips you may not have known. More soon.

   Grasses

Did you know that Johnson grass and tall fescue causes problems and at times rye grass can hurt the alpaca? What kind of grass do you have in the field and what kind gives the best results?

   Pests

Alpaca are pretty resilient to many pests such as flies, mites, etc. What do you do when they get out of hand? More soon.

   Predators

Alabama has more than its share of wild dogs and coyotes. Be sure to take this into consideration when fencing your pasture.

   Shelter
Here in Alabama the shelter is more for shading the animals from the sun than it is for keeping off the winter wind. Do you need a large air-conditioned barn or will a lean-to under a shade tree suffice?

   Water

Tired of taking water to the fence twice a day to make sure they have a fresh supply? Worried the pond might become a trap for the thick furred water-logged friend? There are better ways. More soon.
